Chelsea v Bayern Munich match preview
As a player, Frank Lampard helped Chelsea to victory over Bayern Munich in the 2012 Champions League final but Lampard the manager may struggle to repeat the feat against the Bundesliga champions.
Bayern are firm favourites to win the first leg of their last-16 tie at Stamford Bridge, a venue that has hardly been a fortress for Chelsea this season despite Saturday's 2-1 Premier League win over Tottenham.
The Blues didn't have to be at their best to see off a poor Spurs side and a clash with the Bavarian giants represents a step up in class.
Tottenham can testify to that, having been thumped 7-2 at home by Bayern in October's Group B fixture, and that result came while morale in the Munich camp was supposedly low under former coach Niko Kovac.
The arrival of Hans-Dieter Flick in November seems to have improved Bayern and their attacking talents should fancy their chances of more goals on their latest visit to London.
December's reverse fixture against Spurs produced a 3-1 victory and started a run of ten wins in 11 matches in all competitions. The only blot during that sequence was a goalless draw with title rivals Leipzig, who won their last-16 away leg at Tottenham last week.
Bayern have scored 37 goals in those 11 matches and an attacking unit of Serge Gnabry, Kingsley Coman and Robert Lewandowski, who scored ten goals in the group stage, should be too hot for Chelsea to handle.
While Bayern won six out of six in the group stage, Chelsea qualified in less assured fashion and their three home games yielded a 1-0 defeat to Valencia, a 4-4 draw with Ajax in which they trailed 4-1, and a 2-1 win over a Lille side who picked up just one point in six matches.
West Ham, Bournemouth and Southampton have all won at the Bridge in the league this season while Chelsea's last two home results before the Spurs win were a 2-0 defeat to Manchester United and a 2-2 draw with ten-man Arsenal.
The best betting angle could be to back Bayern to win and both teams to score as Flick's entertainers rarely worry too much about keeping clean sheets.
There is no doubting their goalscoring potential. As well as the 7-2 at Tottenham, they won 3-2 at Olympiakos and 6-0 away to Red Star in the group stage, and goals from Gnabry and Lewandowski (two) gave them a 3-2 win over Paderborn on Friday in the latest in a series of high-scoring domestic matches.
Chelsea made a strong start to the season under Lampard but performances and results in the last few months confirmed the suspicion that they remain a work in progress and Bayern could ruthlessly exploit their lack of Champions League nous.
Key stat
Chelsea kept only one clean sheet in six Champions League Group H matches.
