Best bets and predictions for Tuesday's group matches in the Uefa Champions League.

Shakhtar Donetsk v Borussia Monchengladbach

Where to watch

BT Sport ESPN, 5.55pm Tuesday

Best bet

Borussia Monchengladbach draw no bet
2pts 8-11 Betfred, Hills

Match preview

Shakhtar Donetsk have managed to hold their own in draws with Group B's heavyweight sides Real Madrid and Inter Milan but they could come unstuck against Borussia Monchengladbach.

The German team have also drawn both of their opening group contests but they have been impressive in the Bundesliga, winning three of their last four matches.

They put in a disciplined display in a 1-0 win over RB Leipzig on Saturday, demonstrating they can shut down some of the most prolific attacks and Shakhtar have not been without their faults this term.

In the Ukrainian league, ranked six places below the Bundesliga in Uefa's coefficient standings, Shakhtar have won only four of their first eight matches of the season and conceded nine goals in the process.

With Marcus Thuram, Alassane Plea and Breel Embolo at their disposal, Gladbach look a great selection in the draw-no-bet market.

Key stats

  • Gladbach are unbeaten in their last seven games in all competitions
  • Shakhtar Donetsk managed only one win in six Champions League group games last season
  • Gladbach have netted at least twice in four of their last six games

Lokomotiv Moscow v Atletico Madrid

Where to watch

BT Sport 1, 5.55pm Tuesday

Best bet

Atletico Madrid to win & under 3.5 goals
1pt 20-21 BoyleSports

Match preview

Atletico Madrid are the only side still unbeaten in La Liga this season and their defensive resolve can help them take maximum points against Lokomotiv Moscow in Russia.

Diego Simeone's men have won four and drawn two of their six league assignments, conceding only twice in the process, and after their harrowing defeat to Bayern Munich, they won their first Champions League match of the season against Salzburg last week.

In their last European affair, Lokomotiv came close to earning a shock drawn with Bayern only for a Joshua Kimmich strike to down them late on.

That means they have now gone four matches without a win in all competitions and they are worth opposing but, given how well they contained Munich, they should be fancied to limit the damage. A bet on Atletico to win in a game featuring four of fewer goals could be the way to go.

Key stats

  • Lokomotiv Moscow have lost each of their last three games in all competitions
  • Both teams have scored in only two of Atletico Madrid's last seven matches
  • Atletico Madrid have won four of their last five assignments

Salzburg v Bayern Munich

Where to watch

BT Sport Extra 2, 8pm Tuesday

Best bet

Bayern Munich to win & both teams to score
1pt 11-10 Betway

Match preview

Entertainers Salzburg provided Erling Haaland with a platform on which he could express himself in last season's Champions League and the top-heavy Austrians can play their part in a high-octane affair against Bayern Munich.

Haaland, now with Borussia Dortmund, helped Salzburg to notch 16 group-stage goals last season, despite finishing third in their section, and they have scored twice in each of their opening two games of this season's competition.

With only one defeat in their last 37 matches, Champions League holders Bayern should still be fancied to come out on top but Hansi Flick has looked unsure of his best defensive set-up.

Consequently Bayern have conceded nine times already in their first six league contests of the season and, given they do not look as fierce at the back as last campaign, they could be breached and a Bayern win and both teams to score looks a decent bet.

Key stats

  • Bayern Munich have won five of their six Bundesliga games
  • Bayern Munich have netted 24 goals in their six Bundesliga matches this term
  • Salzburg's last four assignments have featured a total 16 goals

Real Madrid v Inter Milan

Where to watch

BT Sport ESPN, 8pm Tuesday

Best bet

Real Madrid
1pt 10-11 general

Match preview

Neither Real Madrid nor Inter have been the forces punters may have expected to see in Group B this season but the Spaniards have at least managed to stabilise their league form.

Real were left stunned by a 3-2 defeat to Shakhtar Donetsk on the opening matchday before being held to a 2-2 draw by Borussia Monchengladbach, but their league form does not seem to have been affected.

They followed their El Clasico win over Barcelona with a 4-1 thrashing of Huesca and have five wins from their seven league assignments in 2020-21.

Inter drew both of their opening Champions League matches and they have struggled for form in Serie A as well, winning only three of their six games this season. Real look a decent selection at the Alfredo di Stefano Stadium.

Key stats

  • Real Madrid have lost only one of their seven league games
  • Real Madrid have netted at least two goals in each of their last four matches
  • Inter have only one win in their last six games

Porto v Marseille

Where to watch

BT Sport Extra 3, 8pm Tuesday

Best bet

Porto
1pt 17-20 Betfred

Match preview

Porto suffered a shock Portuguese Primeira Liga defeat to Pacos Ferreira on Friday but they can make amends for that loss with a big victory in the Champions League.

The hosts pushed Manchester City close on matchday one, keeping the scores level at the Etihad until the 65th minute and then managed to triumph 2-0 at home to Olympiakos.

Marseille lost without finding the net against both of those sides in the Champions League and were thoroughly outplayed at home to City, managing only two shots and seeing a mere 35 per cent possession.

Goals have been a problem for the French club, who have won only four of their eight Ligue 1 fixtures, scoring a mediocre 11 goals in the process, and punters are best-placed opting for a Porto win at the Estadio do Dragao.

Key stats

  • Porto have netted 15 goals in their six league fixtures this term
  • Porto have scored two goals in six of their eight matches in all competitions this season
  • Marseille have only two wins in their last eight fixtures

Midtjylland v Ajax

Where to watch

BT Sport Extra 4, 8pm Tuesday

Best bet

Ajax -1 goal on handicap
1pt 13-8 Betfair

Match preview

Midtjylland barely laid a glove on Liverpool or Atalanta in their opening two Champions League group matches and they could also struggle to tame energetic Ajax.

The Danes lost their first two games by an aggregate scoreline of 6-0 and have followed their European disappointment with a 4-1 hammering by Superliga rivals Nordsjaelland.

That means they have managed only four wins from six games in the league and Ajax can run out routine winners.

The plucky Dutch earned a valuable point at Atalanta last time out either side of convincing wins over VVV (13-0) and Fortuna Sittard (5-2).

With 29 goals from seven Eredivisie matches, this Ajax side evidently know where the goal is and they could be a decent bet at -1 goal on the handicap.

Key stats

  • Ajax have scored at least two goals in five of their last six Eredivisie games
  • Midtjylland have conceded 12 goals in their last four matches in all competitions
  • Ajax scored 12 goals in their six Champions League group games last season
