Champions League Golden Boot preview

Robert Lewandowski, Mohamed Salah, Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Karim Benzema are among the top ten goalscorers in this season's Champions League but there is a surprise name at the top of the scoring chart.

Ajax's Sebastien Haller, who failed to make much of an impression during a brief spell with West Ham, had a stunning group-stage campaign, scoring ten times in six matches including a four-goal haul on his Champions League debut against Sporting.

Haller faces another Portuguese side, Benfica, in the last 16 and is 11-4 for the Golden Boot although Lewandowski, understandably, is a hot favourite.

Champions League top scorers

10 Sebastien Haller (Ajax)
9 Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich)
7 Mohamed Salah (Liverpool)
7 Christopher Nkunku* (RB Leipzig)
6 Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United)
5
Leroy Sane (Bayern Munich)
5 Karim Benzema (Real Madrid)
5 Lionel Messi (Paris)
5 Riyad Mahrez (Manchester City)

*Plays for a club eliminated in the group stage

The Bayern Munich star is just one goal off the pace with power to add over two legs of the last-16 tie against RB Salzburg and Lewandowski's big-name rivals have ground to make up.

Ronaldo (six goals) has had a poor start to the year at Manchester United while Paris St-Germain's Messi (five) and Kylian Mbappe (four) face a tricky last-16 clash with Real Madrid.

Real striker Karim Benzema is respected at 33-1 although he is in a race to be fit for the first leg against PSG, but Liverpool's Mohamed Salah looks the best alternative to the front two.

Salah, like Christopher Nkunku of eliminated RB Leipzig, scored seven group-stage goals, taking his Champions League record over the past two seasons to 13 goals in 15 starts, and last-16 opponents Atletico Madrid have problems at the back.
