Team news

Bristol City
Alfie Mawson, Andreas Weimann and Nathan Baker are all long-term absentees. Steven Sessegnon is another out, while the match may also come too soon for Liam Walsh and Joe Williams.

Watford
Midfielder Tom Cleverley and defender Christian Kabasele are both doubtful.

Match preview

Three consecutive wins have cemented Bristol City’s place in the Championship’s top-six but the Robins’ recent performances haven’t all merited maximum points and their fortunes may run out at home to Watford.

A 78th-minute strike from substitute Famara Diedhiou earned Bristol City a narrow 1-0 victory over Derby on Saturday but the Rams, who are currently bottom of the Championship, had 63 per cent possession at Ashton Gate and had edged the shot count 13-11.

The Robins recorded one-goal wins at Cardiff and Huddersfield prior to that but saw less of the ball on each occasion and they scored three goals in those games from only four shots on target.

Those efforts appear unsustainable and Watford, who have suffered only one defeat in eight, have the quality to capitalise.

Despite suffering relegation from the Premier League last term, Watford can still call upon the attacking talent of Troy Deeney, Ismaila Sarr, Joao Pedro, Andre Gray and Domingos Quina, which should make them too strong for the lucky Robins.

Key stat

Bournemouth and Norwich - the two sides relegated from the Premier League alongside Watford last season - have already beaten Bristol City this term.
