Match preview

Just fifteen days after falling to an abject 3-0 Premier League defeat at Brighton, FA Cup holders Liverpool return to the scene of the crime on Sunday as they seek to salvage something from their increasingly frustrating season.

Jurgen Klopp called the Reds' capitulation two weeks ago his 'worst game' as Reds boss and the German will be eager for his side to prove a point on their return to the south coast.

For their part, Brighton were outstanding in that deserved success and it may come as a slight surprise that Liverpool are slight favourites for Sunday's fourth-round tie given that league result and the fact they are three places below Albion in the Premier League standings.

Defensive frailties have cost Liverpool time and again this season but they have at least tightened up at the back since their last jaunt to the south coast, winning 1-0 at Wolves in a third-round replay before keeping another clean sheet in a dull goalless league draw at home to Chelsea last weekend.

There was a marked improvement in the Reds' performance levels in those games too, and the FA Cup holders could be a touch of value at 7-5 to secure a hard-fought cup win.

This month's hiding aside, Liverpool actually have a strong recent record at the Amex, winning four and drawing the other of their five visits prior to pitching up on the south coast a fortnight ago.

Brighton have excelled under new manager Roberto de Zerbi. The Italian manager appears to have embraced what looked like an unenviable task of replacing Graham Potter and it was evident in his first game in charge - a pulsating 3-3 draw at Liverpool - that the Seagulls would continue in Potter's image and operate mostly on the front foot.

Leandro Trossard, who scored a memorable hat-trick in that Anfield clash, has joined Arsenal but Albion have quality players throughout their side, including rising star Kaoru Mitoma, who has five goals and two assists from 18 appearances.

Brighton have scored 19 goals in their last six matches in all competitions and they will look to go toe-to-toe with the Reds. But with just one clean sheet in those six games, the visitors will also feel they can get at Albion's backline.

Admittedly, Liverpool's frontline haven't been firing on all cylinders recently but they still possess quality in abundance and could just have the edge to ensure their latest trip to Brighton is much more enjoyable than the last.
