Match preview

Bayern Munich are striding clear in the Bundesliga and can keep their hopes of a domestic double alive with a German Cup semi-final victory at home to Eintracht Frankfurt.

Great teams are judged on silverware and no team are better at securing it than Bayern, who are defending German Cup champions and are closing in on an eighth consecutive Bundesliga crown.

The decision to replace Niko Kovac with Hansi Flick in November has worked a treat for Bayern, who have lost just two of their 26 games under the German’s guidance, winning 15 of their last 16.

Since the return of the Bundesliga, Bayern have won all five of their matches, claiming the scalps of Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen, and have highlighted their array of firepower by scoring 17 goals along the way.

Their remarkable run featured a 5-2 league triumph over Frankfurt at the Allianz Arena just over a fortnight ago and a similar scenario looks likely to play out in this cup clash.

With a seven-point lead on Dortmund in the title race and another cup final on the line, Flick is unlikely to take too many risks with his starting line-up, particularly against an improving Frankfurt unit who carry an attacking threat of their own.

Frankfurt, who beat Bayern in the German Cup final two years ago, have stepped forward markedly in the last few weeks and have eased their relegation fears with seven points from a possible 15.

Last summer’s sales of Luka Jovic, Sebastien Haller and Ante Rebic mean Frankfurt don’t boast the same strength in depth but there is still quality in their ranks, most notably through Milan loanee Andre Silva, who has grabbed four goals in his last six appearances.

Bayern will also know all too well about the impact defender Martin Hinteregger can have when venturing up for set pieces.

The Austrian centre-back is second to only Silva in Frankfurt’s scoring ranks having netted nine times this season, which includes both goals in May’s 5-2 defeat and one in November’s surprise 5-1 triumph, which finally called time on Kovac.

Only the Bundesliga’s big five have netted more than Adi Hutter’s visitors this season and although the are unlikely to spring a shock in Munich, they have enough going forward to breach a Bayern defence who have conceded in three of their four German Cup games this season.

Key stat

Both teams have scored in five of the last seven meetings between the pair.
