Team news

Bayer Leverkusen
In-form forward Kai Havertz has recovered from the knock he sustained in the win at Freiburg. Kevin Volland and Lucas Alario are fit again but Lars Bender remains sidelined.

Bayern Munich
Thiago Alcantara could return to the Bayern midfield, possibly at the expense of Leon Goretzka. Philippe Coutinho and Niklas Sule are still short of full fitness.

Match preview

Bayern Munich are seven points clear at the top of the Bundesliga with five games remaining as they close in on an eighth consecutive league title in Germany.

It would take a spectacular collapse for Bayern to lose the title from this position and a run of 14 wins in their last 15 league games doesn't leave much hope for their nearest challengers Borussia Dortmund.

Joshua Kimmich's chip gave the leaders a 1-0 win at Dortmund on May 26, all but settling the title race in the view of bookmakers, and Hansi Flick's side followed up with a regulation 5-0 victory over Fortuna Dusseldorf last time out.

Perhaps their trickiest remaining hurdle is Saturday's trip to a Bayer Leverkusen side who have won their last two meetings with the Bavarian giants.

In February 2019, goals from Leon Bailey, Kevin Volland and Lucas Alario gave Leverkusen a 3-1 home win over Bayern and Bailey's brace earned them a shock 2-1 victory at the Allianz Arena last November.

Flick had replaced Niko Kovac at the start of the month and that defeat was followed by a loss to Borussia Monchengladbach, heaping early pressure on the new coach.

But Bayern's response to those back-to-back defeats has been outstanding: 43 points from a possible 45 with 51 goals scored and eight conceded.

Robert Lewandowski's prolific goalscoring campaign is a major factor in their success but there are goal threats all over the pitch. In four games since the resumption of the season, six different Bayern players – Lewandowski, Kimmich, Leon Goretzka, Thomas Muller, Benjamin Pavard and Alphonso Davies – have found the net and their opponents have contributed two own goals.

Leverkusen resumed with impressive away wins at Werder Bremen (4-1) and top-four rivals Gladbach (3-1) before a dismal performance in a 4-1 home defeat to Wolfsburg.

They looked jaded in the 1-0 win at Freiburg last time out but still managed to record a tenth away win of the season thanks to yet another goal from prized young forward Kai Havertz.

That away record is a reflection of Leverkusen's threat on the counter-attack so the role of underdogs against Bayern could bring out the best of them.

Flick's visitors are a force to be reckoned with on current form but the match betting may be underrating Leverkusen's quality. The draw looks a tempting price - a result that is unlikely to derail Bayern's title charge but might prove significant in Leverkusen's battle for a Champions League spot next season.

Key stat

Bayer Leverkusen have scored three or more goals in seven of their 12 Bundesliga matches in 2020.
