Match preview

Manchester City are three wins away from a sixth EFL Cup triumph in just eight seasons but the Citizens must get past an Arsenal side who are in sizzling form – at least in cup competitions.

The Gunners won all six of their Europa League group matches this season and have reached the last eight of the EFL Cup after coming through tough away ties at Leicester and Liverpool.

Arsenal also beat the Reds on penalties in the Community Shield, having lifted last season's FA Cup by defeating City in the semi-finals and Chelsea in the final.

Cynics might suggest that the Gunners are able to focus on the cups after being knocked out of the Premier League race and Arteta knows that even a win over his former boss Pep Guardiola will do little to lift the mood in north London.

A tally of 14 points from 14 league matches represents Arsenal's worst start to the season since 1974-75, although the manager took solace from some encouraging xG statistics during Monday's press conference.

However, it is hard to put a positive spin on a run of seven defeats in ten Premier League matches and two of Arsenal's four goals during that dismal spell have come from the penalty spot.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who scored both goals in the FA Cup win over City last term, missed the weekend defeat to Everton due to a calf injury and is unavailable again.

That leaves Arsenal's toothless attack looking even more gummy and they may struggle to land a blow against a City side who have been solid at the back if uncharacteristically short of goals this term.

Ten of their last 11 league games have featured under 2.5 goals, including a 1-0 home win over Arsenal in October when Raheem Sterling scored the only goal.

The England man is a regular thorn in Arsenal's side, scoring four goals in his last five league games against the Gunners, and he is 5-1 to break the deadlock at the Emirates.

However, Guardiola is likely to make changes given the need for City to start making up ground in the Premier League.

Sergio Aguero, Riyad Mahrez, Phil Foden, Nathan Ake and Fernandinho were on the bench for the weekend win at in-form Southampton and that squad depth makes City solid favourites to progress in 90 minutes.

Given Arsenal's goalscoring woes, and the Citizens' run of ten clean sheets in their last 13 games, it may pay to split stakes between 1-0 and 2-0 away wins.

Key stat

Both teams have scored in only one of the last eight meetings between these clubs.
