World Championship day ten preview

The World Darts Championship returns from its Christmas break with a bang with six blockbuster clashes from the third round.

The highlight of the afternoon session sees the sport’s new potential superstar Josh Rock face the tricky Nathan Aspinall.

It demonstrates how feared the 21-year-old is by layers that he is an 8-13 shot against a two-time Ally Pally semi-finalist who has been runner-up in two majors this year.

The evening session begins with a clash between Gabriel Clemens and Jim Williams, who produced the shock of the tournament when he got the better of James Wade in the previous round.

However a prolonged run looks unlikely for the Welshman, whose A game doesn’t quite match up to that of Clemens.

The German Giant averaged 95 in a 3-0 whitewash of William O’Connor in the second round and had a decent end to the year, reaching the quarter-finals of back-to-back European Tour events.

This tie should be more one-sided than is reflected in the betting and Clemens is fancied to come out on top.

The standout clash of the night sees world number one Gerwyn Price renew what has become a real rivalry in 2022 with former world champion Raymond van Barneveld.

The pair have met three times in the last three months and RvB has come out on top on all three occasions including two top performances at the Grand Slam.

The pair seem to bring the best out of each other, sharing 25 180s across 38 legs in their two Grand Slam meetings, and Barney looked to be back to something near his best in his 3-1 win over Ryan Meikle last time out, registering seven maximums.

Price will have to raise his game from what he showed in his win over Luke Woodhouse and this duo could put on a show in a protracted battle. Take them to hit more than 12 180s.

The final game of the day’s play features defending champion Peter Wright against Kim Huybrechts, and the Belgian’s chances may have been underrated.

Huybrechts has recorded comfortable victories in three of the last four meetings with Snakebite, winning 6-0 in two and 6-1 in another.

Wright has been dealing with issues off the oche and averaged just 88 in his second-round win over Mickey Mansell.

Huybrechts was edged 4-3 by Gerwyn Price at this stage last year and is fancied to make the best of a 1.5-set headstart on the handicap against the reigning champ.
