Previews

Michael van Gerwen will probably be busy on the practice board, working on his doubles, as day six of the William Hill World Darts Championship starts at Alexandra Palace.

Van Gerwen started his campaign with a 3-1 victory on Saturday night, but the Dutchman lost the first set to Chas Barstow, missing seven doubles in the deciding leg. That vulnerability on the outer ring needs to be eradicated if Van Gerwen is going to threaten a fourth World title. He is 4-1 second favourite, behind 7-2 market leader Gerwyn Price.

James Wade, a three-time World Championship semi-finalist, starts his Ally Pally campaign on Monday night. Wade is a short-price favourite against Maik Kuivenhoven.

Luke Woodhouse v James Wilson

Head-to-head: Woodhouse leads 1-0

James Wilson turns 50 in February, but the Huddersfield-based arrowsmith is still treading the boards, dreaming about getting past round two of the PDC World Championship for the first time.

In 2014, Wilson was a BDO big cheese, winning the World Darts Trophy and reaching the quarter-finals of the Worlds, but he has always been outclassed on the PDC circuit. Luke Woodhouse can boss the veteran at Alexandra Palace.

Woodhouse has relished the Ally Pally stage in his two previous visits. On his debut - in the 2020 competition - the Bewdley boy averaged 96.02 in thrashing Paul Lim 3-0, then 97.81 in beating Michael Smith 3-1. After dumping out the number four seed, Woodhouse gave Dimitri van den Bergh a scare in round three, before losing 4-2.

There was no disgrace in losing 3-2 to talented Welshman Jamie Lewis in round one in his other World Championship outing - Woodhouse actually averaged better than his opponent - and Woody looks a strong bet at 8-13 to peck his way through to round two.

Rusty-Jake Rodriguez v Ben Robb

Head-to-head: no previous meetings

Rusty-Jake Rodriguez is trying to emerge from the shadow of older brother Rowby-John, who was so impressive in defeating Nick Kenny 3-0 in round one on Saturday night. There are actually three darting Rodriguez brothers, but Roxy-James is well behind his more talented siblings.

Rusty-Jake is by far the youngest - he turns 21 on Christmas Eve - and still has time to become a world-beater. He won the 2017 Junior Darts Corporation World Championship.

Damon Heta, James Wade and Ross Smith are among his Players Championship scalps this year. Ben Robb is one of the weakest players in the Worlds, so Rodriguez can be fancied to triumph in his first Ally Pally match. Robb lost 3-0 in round one - to Ron Meulenkamp - in his only previous Worlds. He may take a set this time, as Rusty-Jake deals with his first-time nerves.

Raymond van Barneveld v Lourence Ilagan

Head-to-head: no previous meetings

Retirement did not last long for Raymond van Barneveld, who quickly decided he needed to get back to the oche, and the 54-year-old should enjoy himself against Lourence Ilagen.

Van Barneveld, a five-times world champion, can quickly dismiss 43-year-old Filipino Ilagen, who has never made it past the first round in five previous World Championship appearances. The Gunner, as Ilagen is known, has rarely impressed outside of Asia.

Van Barneveld hasn't just been gifted his place back on the PDC circuit - he came through the Qualifying School in February, then won his first ranking title since 2013 with a Players Championship success.

Michael Smith and Gary Anderson needed ton-plus averages to beat Barneveld in the Grand Slam of Darts, then Barney averaged 104 in his Players Championship Finals opener, before losing 6-3 to Michael van Gerwen. Expect Barneveld to out-max Ilagen and triumph 3-0.

James Wade v Maik Kuivenhoven

Head-to-head: no previous meetings

James Wade has been dealing with some foot gout in recent weeks, so will be keen to wrap up this contest quickly. The slight physical issue - and Wade's suspect temperament - means the match is probably best left alone as a betting proposition. He should win, but is difficult to trust.
