Lewy Williams v Toyokazu Shibata

Head-to-head: no previous meetings

Young Welsh star Lewy Williams has a big future on the oche and is a short price to beat Japan's Toyokazu Shibata on his Alexandra Palace debut.

Shibata averaged almost 91 in winning Japanese qualifying – he beat the legend Seigo Asada in the last eight – and can compete with the 19-year-old New Prince of Wales. And if he does, expect maximums.

Williams's 180 hitting on his first year on tour was impressive, registering one every 3.5 legs.

Jason Lowe v Daniel Larsson

Head-to-head: no previous meetings

Jason Lowe has enjoyed an better year on tour than first-round opponent Daniel Larsson, although the Swede, who won just one match in 11 Players Championship events in 2021, did top the Nordic rankings.

Lowe's averages certainly suggest he will win but he makes no appeal at 4-11.

Mervyn King v Ryan Joyce

Head-to-head: King leads 1-0

This is the King's 26th World Championship appearance and while the Fenlander's best days are probably behind him, he reached round four last year, the Masters final in January and the last eight of the World Series having whitewashed James Wade with a 115 average.

He can expect a scrap against Ryan Joyce, in what could be a drawn-out affair. Joyce survived a scare in round one against Roman Benecky, but a 93 average suggested his form is okay.

King, the 21st seed, deserves to be favourite. He probably should be shorter, however, than even-money in a 180s matchbet. King averages one every 4.4 legs on tour, Joyce one every 5.6.

Dave Chisnall v Mike de Decker

Head-to-head: no previous meetings

Humiliated at the Grand Slam, Mike de Decker withstood a nine-darter from Darius Labanauskas on Saturday to prove he can chuck some decent tungsten.

Now for Dave Chisnall, a player who blows hot and cold enough to offer any competent opponent a sniff. The Belgian is competent enough to at least nick a set.

Vincent van der Voort v Adam Hunt

Head-to-head: Van der Voort leads 3-0

Quirky stat of the day: Adam Hunt has played four different players with 'van' in their name on tour this year – and lost the lot.

There's been some money for the Hunter after his 3-0 whitewash of Boris Krcmar but that performance was a mixed bag featuring five 180s and plenty of singles fives.

He admits his game hasn't been where it should be this year and if Vincent van der Voort is on – as he was at the Players Championship Finals where he reached the last eight - the Dutchman should oblige as he has on the three occasions they've met before.

Michael Smith v Ron Meulenkamp

Head-to-head: Michael Smith leads 5-3

Two meetings on the floor this year have ended all-square but the big stage is Bully Boy's domain.

There was nothing from Ron Meulenkamp in his whitewash of Lisa Ashton to suggest he can fluster Michael Smith, who has had a good year with two wins and a run to the Grand Slam semi-finals.

Dimitri van den Bergh v Florian Hempel

Head-to-head: no previous meetings

Florian Hempel looked totally at home on the Alexandra Palace stage when winning his all-German showdown with Martin Schindler but Dancing Dimitri is a step up again and if he produces either his Matchplay or World Series form, he will bolt up.

Devon Petersen v Raymond Smith

Head-to-head: no previous meetings

It's a dancing double to end the show with Dancing Devon up next and he faces a tussle against Raymond Smith, who looked rock-solid in taking care of Jamie Hughes.

Having said that, if Devon Petersen is anything like on his game then he should make a mockery of odds of 10-11.
