Day nine betting preview
Rob Cross and Raymond van Barneveld, two of six former winners left in the field, top the bill on day nine of the William Hill World Championship from Alexander Palace, a day which could yield a few surprises.
Damon Heta v Luke Woodhouse
Head-to-head: Heta leads 1-0
There is a good chance there will be some upsets on day nine, the last day of round two action before the last 32 reconvene from Monday.
One or two favourites may well be feeling edgy and Damon Heta is probably one of them after Luke Woodhouse impressed in a 3-1 win over James Wilson in his opener. That said, Heta has enjoyed a fantastic year on tour, scores heavily and still gets the nod, although he's short enough at 2-5.
Brendan Dolan v Callan Rydz
H2H: Rydz leads 3-2
Two of the year's in-form players clash in game two and Callan Rydz, one of the north-east's many emerging stars, is fancied here.
Both men have won on tour this year and both have performed well in majors.
Rydz has the scoring power – he popped in six 180s in 11 legs against Yuki Yamada – while the big negative against Dolan is that in 11 previous trips to the Palace he has only twice got past round two.
Mensur Suljovic v Alan Soutar
H2H: No previous meetings
It's questionable if Mensur Suljovic even knows which Mensur Suljovic is going to turn up for his first match of the competition, but if he's not on it then he faces a serious challenge from Alan Soutar.
Soots has enjoyed a rock-solid year on tour – he's beaten Peter Wright three times which is no mean feat – reaching the last 16 of the UK Open as a highlight.
As for Suljovic, it's anyone's guess. He topped a tricky group at the Grand Slam, was then embarrassed (again) by Fallon Sherrock and looked totally out of sorts at the Players Championship Finals.
Jose de Sousa v Jason Lowe
H2H: De Sousa leads 2-0
Jason Lowe managed to muddle his way past Daniel Larsson in one of round one's poorer affairs and the Englishman faces being blown away by Jose de Sousa.
Lowe should come on for the run but his form isn't especially noteworthy – in 28 floor events in 2021, he has suffered 17 first-round losses.
Danny Noppert v Jason Heaver
H2H: No previous meetings
Jason Heaver admitted nerves got the better of him during a sub-standard showdown with Gordon Mathers in round one, and he will need a dramatic improvement to test Danny Noppert.
The Newbury man has had a reasonable year on tour but the floor and the stage are very different platforms. Stick with Noppy, who looks about right at 2-7.
Gabriel Clemens v Lewy Williams
H2H: Williams leads 1-0
There's been money for Lewy Williams after he impressed in round one but Gabriel Clemens represents a far sterner test than Toyokazu Shibata did.
The match is in for 9.5 maximums, which shows the firepower which will be on display, and Clemens definitely justifies favouritism having reached round four here last year and boasting a mightily impressive 56 per cent legs-won tally on tour.
Rob Cross v Raymond van Barneveld
H2H: Cross leads 7-2
Barney is back and throwing well – but the fun will surely end here against Rob Cross, who is also massively improved after a spell in the doldrums.
These have been a fine few months for Cross, the newly-crowned European champion, and he's getting the level of consistency back that he had in his world title-winning pomp.
Barney will have the crowd behind him and he has beaten Voltage twice on tour this year. But Cross was tipped at the outset and there has been no reason to desert him.
Chris Dobey v Rusty-Jake Rodriguez
H2H: Rodriguez leads 1-0
RJR3, a serial winner on the European Development Tour, brought that form to the Palace with a near-94 average against Ben Robb and can give Chris Dobey a run.
This should be a cracker, could easily go the distance, and is sure to feature a barrage of maximums. Backing the young Austrian on the handicap covers both expected the marathon and his chances of winning.
