World Darts Championship day four preview
Rock-solid Raymond Smith was a towering success at Alexandra Palace 12 months ago and can prove that was no fluke by getting past Karel Sedlacek in his first-round duel this time.
Giant Smith made a real name for himself last year beating Jamie Hughes, Devon Petersen and Florian Hempel – all easily – before running out of steam in a bruising last-16 encounter with Mervyn King.
The reigning Australian Open champion produced averages in the mid-90s in each of his three victories last time and anything like a repeat of that ought to be far too much firepower for Sedlacek.
Czech ace Sedlacek has had a couple of goes at the PDC worlds without any success and looks a shaky favourite.
Mike de Decker should have too much for Jeff Smith and if the Belgian does deliver then it's pretty much a certainty that he will pin the most maximums as well.
De Decker is a beast around the treble-20 bed, averaging one every 2.9 legs on the Pro Tour in 2022, a feat bettered by only five other players.
Canadian Smith isn't in the same ballpark – he averages a maximum every 11.5 legs.
Smith obviously has bags of big-stage pedigree as the 2016 BDO world championship runner-up, but he hasn't had a particularly memorable year.
De Decker posted good numbers in his two matches at last month's Players Championship finals and defied the odds to beat Darius Labanauskas in round one last year before losing with a 96 average against Dave Chisnall in round two.
Ryan Joyce has had a pretty awful end to 2022, winning just six matches in his last ten Pro Tour events.
It's a run that has seen him tumble down the rankings yet he can still produce when it matters and his nous and winning mentality can see him take down Scott Williams.
In among all the rubbish from Joyce there was a run to the third round in Gibraltar – where he averaged 102 in defeat to Rob Cross – and victories over Gerwyn Price and Jermaine Wattimena at last month's Players Championship Finals.
And Joyce can focus on a fifth consecutive Ally Pally appearance after looking sharp in qualifying, where he overcame Max Hopp, Rusty-Jake Rodriguez and Jamie Clark.
