World Darts Championship day six preview
Raymond van Barneveld, the five-time world champion, is back at Alexandra Palace in front of his beloved Barney Army, who shouldn't expect a cakewalk for their man in round two of the PDC World Darts Championship.
Suffolk left-hander Ryan Meikle is the man with the unenviable task of silencing Van Barneveld's supporters and then beating the man himself, and there's no doubt he can at the very least go close in both of those assignments.
Barney, now 55, showed glimpses of the old magic at last month's Grand Slam where he beat Gerwyn Price twice on his way to the semi-finals.
On pure darting pedigree you'd struggle to dispute he should be favourite against Meikle, whose appearances on the big stage and under the TV lights are rare.
That said, Meikle has already played at Ally Pally this week having gone through a first-round showdown with Lisa Ashton which he won 3-2.
And that was a good test for Meikle. The crowd were against him, Ashton went through a purple patch which he survived, and he blitzed the final set 3-0 to finish with a perfectly acceptable 91.88 average.
In those 22 legs he lobbed in five maximums and looks top value at 6-5 to out-180 Van Barneveld.
Meikle averages a 180 every 4.2 legs on the Pro Tour this season, Van Barneveld one every 5.2. They have met twice on the floor this year – both went the distance, with a win apiece – and Meikle won the 180 counts 3-2 and 5-0 in those contests.
The other headline act is Fallon Sherrock, the Queen of the Palace, against Ricky Evans.
Sherrock is under massive pressure having been shoehorned into the field despite not meeting the original qualification criteria, so she'll be feeling the heat on a stage where she captured the hearts of the darting world three years ago.
But she's not playing well and Ricky Evans is exactly the opponent she wouldn't elect to play against, because he's just far too fast to feel any tension.
Polish teenager Sebastian Bialecki has a throw which shouldn't malfunction and given he's a player who has popped in a nine-darter at the UK Open, you'd fancy him to reach three maximums against Jim Williams.
