World Darts Championship day five preview

Simon Whitlock profited from some slack finishing from Christian Perez as he recorded a nerve-shredding 3-2 win in the opening round of this year’s World Championship, but the Wizard’s magic may desert him against Jose De Sousa.

Whitlock averaged just 87.25 in Saturday’s win and Perez’s mistakes on the outer ring even allowed the Australian to record a 30-dart hold in what ultimately decided the fifth and final set.

In fact, the inexperienced Perez was only nine from 35 on doubles but finished the contest the stronger, suggesting monumental improvements are needed from Whitlock now the opposition is stronger.

The Australian tends to rely on his heavy-scoring abilities but managed only three maximums from the 20 legs played against the man from the Philippines, showing he was some way off his peak.

De Sousa is inconsistent but when in the groove the Special One is capable of some special things and this feels like a contest the 17th seed is unlikely to slip up in.

Ritchie Edhouse averaged 95.67 and took a set off Gerwyn Price in losing in the second round at Alexandra Palace 12 months ago, and should be too hot for David Cameron to handle in this year’s opener.

Edhouse, up to world number 49, defeated Michael Smith 6-5 before being on the wrong end of another decider against Dimitri Van den Bergh at the Players Championship Finals at the end of November, two performances that highlight his capabilities.

Canadian chucker Cameron has done most of his recent competing on the Online Live League - his last six games of which ended in defeat - and Edhouse can have his measure.

Steve Beaton returns for a record-breaking 32nd consecutive World Championship appearance and the Bronzed Adonis can make all that experience count against Danny van Trijp.

Beaton managed the situation well as he denied Fallon Sherrock a dream return to the Palace in the first round last year, winning 3-2, and has enjoyed a remarkable return to form in recent months.

The veteran reached the final of Players Championship 30 in November, finishing runner-up to James Wade after overcoming the likes of Mike De Decker, Stephen Bunting and Dave Chisnall.

Dutch youngster Van Trijp makes his World Championship debut and, having found wins seriously hard to come by in recent months, could be overawed by this occasion.
