World Championship day 14 preview

Michael van Gerwen is odds-against for the title with just three bookmakers heading into quarter-finals day. Mighty Mike is a general even-money to win a fourth World Championship on Tuesday night and a best-price 11-10 with Betfair and Paddy Power.

Only eight players remain from the 96 runners who started the World Championship. There are only two former PDC world champions left - Van Gerwen and Gerwyn Price. Stephen Bunting, who won the 2014 BDO World Championship, is 22-1 to land a first PDC crown on Tuesday.

Dimitri van den Bergh v Jonny Clayton (12.45pm)

Quarter-finals day starts with a meeting between enigmatic Belgian Dimitri van den Bergh and phlegmatic Welshman Jonny Clayton. There is not much between them in terms of how they have been performing in this event - DVDB has produced averages of 94.69, 92.92 and 95.59, while Clayton has delivered 99.62, 93.76 and 97.73.

DVDB has dropped only one set to Clayton's four, but Clayton has overcome the greatest challenge - a fourth-round meeting with rising star Josh Rock. The Ferret needed to draw on all his experience and trademark calmness to see off Rocky last time out - the 48-year-old won a final-set decider - and this quarter-final could be a similar story.

These two are closely matched, but Clayton has won four Majors and has shown himself mentally the stronger of the pair. The 2021 Premier League champ can edge home 5-4.

Michael Smith v Stephen Bunting (approx 2.30pm)

Ally Pally punters who have tickets for the afternoon session should see more darts than those attending in the evening - match two also seems set to be a long one. Stephen Bunting is full of beans, feeling capable of becoming world champion for the second time, having averaged 102.24 and 99.43 in beating Dave Chisnall and Luke Humphries in his last two outings.

Bunting has proved he can handle the Ally Pally stage, losing a quarter-final to Raymond van Barneveld 5-4 on his debut in 2015, then going down 6-4 to Gerwyn Price in the 2021 semi-finals. This is Bunting's third PDC World Championship quarter-final appearance and he can push Michael Smith.

Expect a tight contest before the two-time World Championship runner-up steps up a gear for a 5-3 victory. Bully Boy's scoring power should prove decisive in the end.

Gerwyn Price v Gabriel Clemens (7.45pm)

World number one Gerwyn Price has advanced to the World Championship quarter-finals for a fourth consecutive year, without needing to produce his A-game. Price will not be happy with his form, particularly some wild attempts at double-top against Jose de Sousa, but the Iceman has never looked in danger of being eliminated.

This could be a classic case of a class act timing his run perfectly - a Rolls-Royce arrowsmith peaking for when it matters most. Price's averages have crept up each match (92.88, 93.68, 94.43) and he has lost only two sets. The boo-boys who blight his Ally Pally visits should not be too troublesome for this - Gabriel Clemens' fan club is in its infancy - and the 39-year-old German has never got this far in any PDC Major.

Michael van Gerwen v Chris Dobey (approx 9.30pm)

Arrers fans could be treated to an evening-session masterclass from the two best players in the world. Gerwyn Price seems likely to step up a gear and show no mercy to an inevitably nervous Gabriel Clemens, while Michael van Gerwen should be equally ruthless against Chris Dobey. Two 5-1 victories could be on the cards.

Dobey is a 32-year-old who has never won a major title and has got to the World Championship quarter-finals for the first time. Van Gerwen has won 11 of their 12 meetings. He lost the last one, missing four match darts in a 6-5 Dortmund defeat in the European Championship in October, but normal service can resume over a long-distance contest at the Palace.

Van Gerwen has averaged more than 100 in all three of his World Championship matches so far. Dobey should be comfortably outclassed. Chance a Yankee - six doubles, four trebles and one fourfold - on the four correct-score predictions.
