Day 11 preview

Three of the past four champions grace the Alexandra Palace stage on Tuesday evening, though the afternoon bill, featuring well-fancied English aces Joe Cullen and Ryan Searle, is no less eye-catching on a big day of third-round action at the William Hill World Championship.

Steve Lennon v Mervyn King

Head-to-head: Lennon leads 3-1

The sight of Mervyn King going through a seven-setter is truly one of sport's most wondrous things.

The 55-year-old former world number four can often appear to be close to self-combustion under the lights and if the heat does get to the beetroot-faced Fenlander, then Steve Lennon's in business.

Both men have looked good so far - they both batter the treble-20 bed for fun – the game's in for 11.5 maxes and they can smash that with the Irishman more than capable of winning.

Ryan Searle v Danny Noppert

H2H: Noppert leads 5-0

There were many who thought the nine-dart kid, Willie Borland, would put the tungsten headbanger in his place in round two, only to be left sorely disappointed. Those same doubters who look at Ryan Searle's head-to-head record against Danny Noppert and continue to forecast the end for the metalhead, will likely be left every bit as disappointed and out of pocket.

Heavy Metal has never been in better nick and Noppert didn't look great against Jason Heaver in his opener. Stick with Racing Post Sport's outright tournament selection.

Joe Cullen v Martijn Kleermaker

H2H: Kleermaker leads 2-1

This promises to be a drawn-out affair between two players who will produce in flashes but give up loads of chances.

Here's a stat for you - in 12 of Cullen's 15 previous matches at the worlds he has conceded three sets or more which amply illustrates his abject record and will give Martijn Kleermaker backers some real hope. This should go to at least six sets.

Rob Cross v Daryl Gurney

H2H: Cross leads 12-6

Rob Cross held his nerve to shatter Barney's bid for world glory before Christmas, and having come through that largely thankless test Voltage should only get stronger.

Daryl Gurney played well against Ricky Evans and, like Cross, is on the comeback trail after a spell in the doldrums. This should be a belter and we're not deserting another outright pick Cross.

Peter Wright v Damon Heta

H2H: Wright leads 3-1

There's no obvious reason to believe Damon Heta can spring a surprise given Snakebite gets stronger and stronger as tournaments go on.

Wright's still short enough given Heta played well in his opener against Luke Woodhouse, hitting a couple of ton-plus checkouts. He'll be presented with his share of big finishing opportunities by Wright and it may well be worth backing the Aussie to land high checkout honours at 5-4.
