Preview

Ninety-five players went to post and by close of play on Wednesday the field will be down to eight as the William Hill World Championship gears up for a New Year's Day quarter-finals spectacular.

Vincent van der Voort v Daryl Gurney 12.15pm

Vincent van der Voort and Daryl Gurney open up proceedings. The bookies fancy Superchin and they are probably right to.

The former Premier League star is averaging over 100. He has that big-scoring consistency back and that ought to prove decisive.

Van der Voort beat Gurney well at the World Matchplay in July but the Northern Irish ace has improved late in the campaign.

Stephen Bunting v Ryan Searle 1.30pm

Stephen Bunting defied a nine-darter from James Wade to reach the last 16 and can now defy the odds to make the last eight.

The former BDO world champ reeled off four straight sets after falling 2-0 behind to Wade, following a gutsy last-leg triumph over Andy Boulton a round earlier, and he seems to be playing without any inhibitions in the absence of a crowd.

He will fancy he can beat Ryan Searle, whose figures are certainly no more impressive than the Bullet's – Bunting is averaging 93.2 and 32 per cent on checkouts, Searle is averaging 92.7 and 34 per cent.

There's nothing in the head to heads and Bunting looks the value.

Devon Petersen v Gary Anderson 2.45pm

Gary Anderson looks very beatable at the moment but it's questionable whether Devon Petersen is the man to deliver the decisive blow.

The Scot doesn't seem bothered by a knee problem, merely the antics of all his opponents, and if Petersen is clever he'll find a way to get under Anderson's skin.

He'll have to do something because the South African has thrown patchily so far.

Glen Durrant v Dirk van Duijvenbode 6.15pm

Michael van Gerwen comparisons are following Dirk van Duijvenbode around at Alexandra Palace with the Dutchman fancied by many to become the PDC's third Dutch world champ following Raymond van Barneveld and Van Gerwen.

The Titan is certainly warming to the task nicely and looks like he's got the game to outgun former BDO hero Glen Durrant.

Van Duijvenbode is the non-seed in this battle yet is the odds-on favourite - but not so short that he shouldn't be backed.

He warmed to the task by pipping world youth champ Bradley Brooks and former world champion Rob Cross in deciders and then hit the afterburners by torching Adam Hunt 4-0 in round three.

Premier League champion Duzza has been messy and admits no one's talking about him as a possible winner because his form coming in wasn't great. His tournament average is around 92, while Van Duijvenbode's is 96.

The super-confident Dutchman is the bet to wib, but also backing him to hit more 180s appeals. The prices reflect the Pro Tour stats (DVD hitting a max every 4.11 legs, Durrant one every 4.22) but not their form over the past fortnight. Van Duijvenbode has pinged 16 180s in 55 legs, while Duzza has hit just three in 37.

Gerwyn Price v Mervyn King 7.30pm

Mervyn King has carried on the form which saw him finish runner-up at last month's Players Championship Finals by beating Max Hopp 3-1 and whitewashing the well-regarded Jose de Sousa.

He knows he can beat third seed Gerwyn Price, who has survived a pair of epic encounters against Jamie Lewis and Brendan Dolan.

That said, Price can raise his game – nobody has won more titles in 2020 than the Welshman.
