World Matchplay second-round preview

Rob Cross produced the best comeback of round one of the Betfred World Matchplay but that shouldn't necessarily excite punters ahead of his second-round dust-up with Jose de Sousa.

Voltage hit back from 8-2 down to pip Chris Dobey 11-9 at the Winter Gardens, though Dobey put it down to a "bottle job" on his part rather than anything exceptional from Cross.

And the stats bear that out. Cross, despite a respectable enough 34 per cent finishing, averaged only a shade above 90 and was below his best, as he has been for a while.

But it opens the door for De Sousa, whose form has been all over the place but he boasts a good head-to-head record against Cross, winning four of their last six games. He looked rock solid when beating up Gabriel Clemens 10-6 in his opener with a barrage of big scores.

Talking of big scores, Gerwyn Price hit eight 180s in his 10-8 success over Martin Schindler. He now plays Dave Chisnall, obviously a renowned maximum-hitter, though he struggled in the heat to locate the red bit against Kim Huybrechts.

He is streaky but Price can be too and the Ice Man looks a massive price at 13-5 to win the 180s match.
