Second-round preview

Extra homework on the double-in, double-out format paid off for Chris Dobey on his BoyleSports World Grand Prix debut on Sunday and makes him a genuine danger to fourth seed Gary Anderson in round two.

Geordie Dobey has been playing in his local leagues where doubles-in are par for the course and he reaped the benefits during his 2-0 whitewash of Ricky Evans.

Hollywood hit eight out of his 12 attempts at a starting double and that level of consistency was far too good for Rapid Ricky. Anything similar might also be too hot for Anderson.

When these two friends last met on the big stage at the William Hill World Championship in December it was Anderson who prevailed 4-3 in a thriller and another close call is on the cards.

With The Flying Scotsman saying he is "not 100 per cent", Dobey at the very least warrants a bet on the handicap to win at least two sets in the race to three.

Anderson is playing with new darts in Dublin this week and looked solid enough seeing off the challenge of Keegan Brown.

His scoring wasn’t great but he kicked off legs well.

Given that by his own admission the hunger’s not there any more, it will be interesting to see how he responds if Dobey gives him the type of game Brown simply failed to.

Michael Smith was acutely aware of his lamentable Grand Prix record going into his tricky opener against Simon Whitlock and that, coupled with the fact that he lost the first set, made his 2-1 success all the sweeter.

It was just Bully Boy’s third win on the Citywest stage in his seventh visit to the event and, with spirits soaring, he can quickly deliver a fourth against Ian White.
