World Matchplay day two preview

Gary Anderson meets one of his many bete noires in round one of the Betfred World Matchplay on Sunday and it could end in tears for the former champion.

The Flying Scotsman, who seems to get irked by many things these days, blew a gasket against Daryl Gurney when they met in the 2018 Grand Prix, a match Superchin won.

Given that Gurney can get under the Scot's skin and that it's anyone's guess how Anderson will play, the Northern Irish outsider gets the nod.

Anderson was all over the place in the Premier League, finishing bottom. In 15 weeks of action he managed to win just five matches.

Gurney beat him when they last met in the Winter Gardens five years ago and is showing signs of a return to the form that got him into the Premier League not so long ago. He also beat the Scot in their only meeting this year.

There is another bet from the match, which is Gurney to hit most maximums.

On the floor – where Anderson hardly plays – the Scot boasts a 180 every 3.28 legs, Gurney one every 3.35. In the Premier League, where Anderson played every week, he averaged a max every 4.17 legs. The value lies with Gurney.

On all form Dirk van Duijvenbode ought to make light work of Ryan Searle, hence the odds-on quote. There's definitely a case for trying to nick a bigger price by backing the Dutchman giving 2.5 legs on the handicap at 6-4.
