Starlets can carry on shining against experienced legends
Talented young guns Gurney and Cross fancied to prosper
Sky Sports Action, 7pm Thursday
Rising stars Daryl Gurney and Rob Cross have had stellar years on the PDC tour and can continue to impress by putting old stagers James Wade and Raymond van Barneveld in their place in round two of the Grand Slam.
Gurney, who won the Grand Prix last month and is up to fourth in the world, won all three of his group matches and should have too much firepower for Wade.
Superchin is averaging more than ten points better than the Englishman while his checkout percentage of 66 bowls away Wade's modest 29. Wade's finishing skills, especially under pressure, have stood him apart over the years, but when he's struggling on the outer ring he becomes that much more beatable.
Put Gurney in a double with Cross, who can take care of Barney. The double works out at 73-50 with Betfair.
Cross finished second in Group A behind Michael van Gerwen having blown darts to beat the world number one.
His lowest average in his three matches is 103.78 and he looks the real deal.
Cross has played 2012 Grand Slam winner Barney twice this year and beaten him both times, high spots in a debut campaign in which he has won four floor titles but also looks right at home on the big stage.
Darren Webster scraped into the last 16 courtesy of winning a nine-dart shootout with Mark Webster, but the Demolition Man looks too inconsistent to be able to oust Phil Taylor.
Webster has happy memories of beating Taylor 5-0 in the group stage 12 months ago, but over the longer format – second-round games are best-of-19 affairs – Taylor gets the nod.
Van Gerwen should beat Steve Lennon in his Thursday contest.
Recommendation
D Gurney 4-9 & R Cross 7-10 double
2pts 73-50 Betfair
