Day eight preview

The layers keep writing her off and Fallon Sherrock keeps proving them wrong, and the Queen of the Palace might just be a price to get stuck into against Peter Wright in the Grand Slam quarter-finals.

Sherrock is a 100-30 shot, which would have been unthinkable a few months back when Snakebite was winning the World Matchplay and looking the business.

Since then, however, the Scot has suffered a number of early exits from big events and even this week in Wolverhampton he looks a long way from his best.

This is a repeat of their meeting on Saturday which Wright won 5-1, although there was precious little to choose between them. The difference was on the doubles – Wright hit five of 16 outshots, Sherrock just one of nine.

Since then, Wright has been defeated by Gabriel Clemens while Sherrock is unbeaten. Wright is averaging 91.5 for the tournament, Sherrock 94.

Suddenly, on that evidence, Sherrock doesn't look like a 100-30 shot at all. Utterly fearless and supremely confident, she looks like she belongs on the big stage and Wright, of course, is going to have to deal with the fact that the entire crowd will be rooting for Sherrock.

Michael van Gerwen takes on Michael Smith in Saturday's other quarter-final and the biggest challenge here is second guessing Bully Boy's mindset.

He certainly looks focused and motivated, and he is clearly throwing well having already beaten Gary Anderson and Joe Cullen, so he should give Van Gerwen a game. A punt on over 27.5 legs in the best-of-31 contest looks the best play.
