Maximums continue to rise in the worlds and there seems no obvious reason why the arrowsmiths gathered in north London over the festive period won’t send total 180s past the 700 barrier again.

Betfred have pitched their tournament 180s line at 685.5 and it’s hard to think of many reasons why you wouldn’t want to back overs.

It’s amazing to think that there were 199 more maximums at the Palace last year than seven years ago. The preliminary round format is slightly longer nowadays but that isn’t the explanation.

The fact is that the standard across the board has improved so much that all players are capable of belting the living daylights out of the treble-20 bed on a regular basis.

It’s clear you’ll want certain players – Michael van Gerwen, Gary Anderson, Dave Chisnall – to go deep for the bet to cop, and Chizzy looks like the quarters are his limit, though that’s as far as he went last year.

But last year, some massive 180 gatherers including Stephen Bunting, Steve West, Robbie Green, Justin Pipe and Jamie Caven didn’t get past round one.

Meanwhile, not a single match in the quarter-finals or beyond went the distance, and that’s where the real damage is going to get done. Indeed, only 15 of 63 matches from round one onwards went to a final set.
