Night 12 preview

Nathan Aspinall tasted Premier League defeat for just the second time on Thursday night but he can return to winning ways by getting the better of Jonny Clayton at the Marshall Arena in Milton Keynes.

There was precious little wrong with The Asp's performance in his 8-6 loss to Dimitri van den Bergh, firing in six 180s and 50 percent of his checkouts. It always looked a tight game between two of the in-form players of the competition, and it was the Belgian who prevailed.

But Aspinall, who had gone eight league games without defeat before Thursday's setback, can get back on the bike against Clayton, who dropped out of the top four on the same evening after finally suffering a loss at the hands of Michael van Gerwen.

Clayton had won his last three clashes with Van Gerwen but the Dutchman looked good, the Welshman less so, and the upshot was an 8-5 win for the Green Machine which should have been more comprehensive.

Aspinall and Clayton met three times in 2020 and the Asp won the lot while their Premier League showdown last month ended in a 6-6 draw.

Clayton's place in the top four has been taken by another debutant Jose de Sousa, who after failing to win any of his first four matches is suddenly looking an incredibly tough opponent. As Peter Wright may well find out.

The Portuguese Man O'Scores is going to smash the tournament 180s record after adding another ten against James Wade on Thursday to make it 64 for the competition so far.

However, it was the four missed match doubles that proved more newsworthy than the customary blitz on the treble-20 bed, enabling Wade to somehow emerge from the assault with a 7-7 draw.

When De Sousa gets it right he's very hard to live with and he'll fancy taking Snakebite to the cleaners.

Wright looked wrong – in many ways – in his 8-3 defeat by Gary Anderson and has to be accepting the playoffs are probably beyond him with so many good players above him in the table. Back De Sousa on the handicap to win 8-5 or better.

Van Gerwen is a dangerous man when he's on a roll and two wins out of two does represent a roll for the spluttering Dutchman. Next up for the five-time champion and former world number one is a dust-up with Wade, who he lost 7-3 to on Night Four.

The leftie is so hard to call and continues to nick legs if he's offered just a whiff of the outer ring. To that extent, MvG is short enough.

The same, however, can't be said of Van den Bergh who can take care of Anderson. Yes, the Scot looked very slick against an off-colour Wright but Van den Bergh will give him a proper test and on current form the Dream Maker looks as good as anyone in this.
