Michael Smith v Peter Wright
Head-to-head: Wright leads 17-10
One big night of sporting drama in Liverpool is followed by another as Michael Smith and Peter Wright kick off Week Six of the Premier League at the M&S Bank Arena.
Bully Boy is aiming for a fourth straight win which would take him, for an hour at least, to the top of the table.
He has beaten Snakebite this year in Belgium and should have beaten him in the final of the Masters in January, when three missed match darts cost Smith dear.
World champion Wright is rightly favourite, although it could well go the distance. Both league matches in 2019 were draws and 15 of the 25 matches played in this campaign have gone to a 12th and final leg.
Match 180s are in for 6.5 which might seem a lot given only seven of the 25 matches have yielded seven or more maximums. However, five of those seven games featured one of these players.
Daryl Gurney v Glen Durrant
Tied at 2-2
Bottom of the table takes on top in match two, although Daryl Gurney is playing well enough to believe he can beat Glen Durrant.
Draws in two of his last three matches have at least given Superchin hope of avoiding the wooden spoon.
He also showed gallons of bottle at the Ladbrokes UK Open at the weekend, winning three last-leg shootouts and beating Wright to make the semis.
Gurney beat Durrant 7-3 in this competition last year and can at least avoid defeat against Durrant.
Gerwyn Price v Michael van Gerwen
Van Gerwen leads 20-2
Four days after contesting the UK Open final Michael van Gerwen and Gerwyn Price meet again in the Premier League.
The Green Machine got up in Minehead, triumphing 11-9 in a nailbiter, and this rivalry, for so long dominated by the Dutchman, is now a proper contest. After winning their first 15 meetings, Van Gerwen has a lot less in hand these days.
Now Van Gerwen's confidence is up again – his UK Open triumph ended a run of nine events without a title – he’ll take some shifting.
Rob Cross v Stephen Bunting
Cross leads 4-0
Rob Cross and Stephen Bunting also met in Minehead, in a last-16 showdown which Voltage won 10-8.
Cross has never lost to the Bullet and he can extend that winning streak to five matches.
Bunting shows glimpses of form – he beat some good sorts making it to a Pro Tour semi-final last month – but his form is more down than up.
Gary Anderson v Nathan Aspinall
Aspinall leads 2-1
Gary Anderson became the first Premier League star to lose to a guest player when he was beaten 7-5 by Luke Humphries last Thursday.
It was a classic Anderson performance – four 180s but 18 missed doubles out of 23 – and any sort of a repeat of that would leave him vulnerable against the excellent Nathan Aspinall.
The problem with the Scot is that it’s anyone’s guess which of his many guises we will see in Liverpool, and that makes him hard to bet on.
The Asp, who will have plenty of local support, is more consistent and gets the nod.
