Night Four betting preview
Gerwyn Price and Peter Wright, the top two in the world, meet again on Night Four of the Premier League in Exeter, just days after the Iceman beat the Scot in a belter in Germany.
Both men averaged close to 107 in the final of the International Darts Open in Riesa on Sunday, when the Welshman won 8-4 courtesy of a doubling masterclass.
Price is 8-11 to beat Snakebite in the tie of the first round at the Westpoint Arena and 7-2 to go on to claim Night Four glory.
Jonny Clayton v Michael van Gerwen
Head-to-head: Van Gerwen leads 12-10
Night Four kicks off with Jonny Clayton against Michael van Gerwen, with the Welshman the slight favourite to make it seven wins in their last eight meetings. The most recent of those was three weeks ago in this event in Liverpool, a semi-final which The Ferret won 6-4.
Clayton, as the 'home' player, throws first in Exeter, yet it's interesting that Van Gerwen has won 13 of his 25 legs against the darts. Given that he's played only five matches that's pretty impressive, and the five-time champ could be a bit of value at evens.
Michael Smith v Joe Cullen
Head-to-head: Smith leads 10-7
Bully Boy is the only man without a point on the board in the new format but he can get off the mark against Joe Cullen.
Smith's claim to fame - of sorts - is that he's run into three juggernauts so far, with his first-round conquerors going on to win that night's tournament. Last time out in Belfast, Smith averaged 103.55 and still lost to an imperious Price.
Smith is getting there – he won twice at the International Open at the weekend – and can win this with one break of throw, so backing a 6-3 scoreline could offer decent value.
Gerwyn Price v Peter Wright
Head-to-head: Wright leads 19-10
The star quarter-final has to be Price v Wright, their fifth meeting in the last 12 months. The previous four, all finals, were split 2-2.
Price is the favourite and has probably never thrown better, although you discount world champ Wright at your peril. He was within a few darts of dethroning the Welshman as world number one on Sunday which is a measure of just how close these two are.
It's a game to savour as much as bet on, although a punt on 180s might be a way in. They are both prolific hitters, Price having hit 17 in 59 legs, Wright 16 in 54. That doesn't appear enough of a difference to make Price the 6-4 outsider.
James Wade v Gary Anderson
Head-to-head: Anderson leads 30-16
This fixture has produced the most draws in Premier League history and unless the format changes again, that's a record that will not be broken.
Five of their previous 13 meetings have ended 6-6 and while that cannot happen this time, it does at least demonstrate that in this competition there's precious little to choose between these former champs.
It's little wonder then that several firms cannot separate the pair of them.
Wade played well in Riesa at the weekend, averaging over 99 in two of his three games, and can clear the figure of 94.5 that Betfair have him in for.
