Day 13 preview

Gerwyn Price said he "wouldn't disagree" with pulling the plug on the William Hill World Championship after Dave Chisnall became the third player to withdraw from the tournament at Alexandra Palace after a positive Covid test.

Chizzy, the number 14 seed, had been due to play Luke Humphries in round three, with Cool Hand now getting a bye to face Chris Dobey in the last 16.

Dobey had himself been the player to benefit from Michael van Gerwen's Covid-enforced exit 24 hours earlier which prompted bookmakers to void all outright bets on the well-fancied three-time world champion. Vincent van der Voort had been the first player to fail a Covid test.

Defending champ Price, the 3-1 tournament favourite ahead of his showdown with Dirk van Duijvenbode, tweeted: "I'd rather play the best to be the best. There's a lot of hard work gone into getting events like the World Championship on, so postponing probably isn't the best option – but an option I wouldn't disagree with."

Raymond Smith v Mervyn King

Head-to-head: No previous meetings

There's a natural tendency to dismiss Raymond Smith on the grounds that no Aussie other than The Beard has done well at Ally Pally.

But just look at the man's figures. Consistent? How about averages of 94.84, 93.25 and 94.79 seeing off Jamie Hughes, Devon Petersen and Florian Hempel, and he boasts a throw which doesn't look like it's going to buckle.

King looked superb whitewashing Steve Lennon and is enjoying a decent year, but this promises to be a proper battle between a pair of warriors who'll not give an inch.

Alan Soutar v Callan Rydz

H2H: Rydz leads 1-0

Callan Rydz' title odds were slashed from 66-1 to a general 14-1 following his 4-0 battering of Nathan Aspinall.

The Geordie gifted the Asp just four legs and he has not dropped a set in three rounds.

He makes darts look easy – as opposed to Alan Soutar, who is also enjoying a memorable week or so but is being made to work far harder than his last-16 opponent.

Victories over Mensur Suljovic and Jose de Sousa are no mean feat – although The Special One was anything but special yesterday – but everything here points to Rydz landing the odds.

Chris Dobey v Luke Humphries

Head-to-head: Dobey leads 4-3

Two players who share the duel distinction of having beaten a member of the Rodriguez family in round two and being handed a bye through round three, now meet in round four.

They've met twice in 2021, both on the floor and yielding a win each. And if both men play at their best, it's a cracker.

Everything says it's a tight game, and the prices mirror that.

James Wade v Martijn Kleermaker

H2H: No previous meetings

James Wade has beaten one Dutchman, sidestepped another and now aims to complete a Lowland hat-trick over towering Martijn Kleermaker – but it's the Dutch giant who looks to be the value.

Wade produced his lowest average in 13 years at the worlds seeing off Mike Kuivenhoven in round two and promptly gave one of his trademark 'couldn't-care-less' interviews that should ensure he gets nowhere near next year's Premier League.

Kleermaker, who would be 10s-on in an enthusiasm matchbet, displayed guts fending off a 180 barrage from Joe Cullen to come out a 4-3 winner. He's playing well, loving it and can test Wade, who has been twiddling his thumbs after third-round opponent Vincent van der Voort's Covid-enforced withdrawal.

Peter Wright v Ryan Searle

H2H: Wright leads 7-2

Damon Heta gave Peter Wright a few scares on Tuesday night, Snakebite needing yet another mid-match change of hardware to turn a 2-0 deficit into a 4-2 win.

Heta didn't have the firepower to kick Snakey when he was down but Ryan Searle definitely has.

There was nothing between them at last month's Players Championship Finals final – Wright nicked it 11-10 – and again this will be close. Searle's our man and we're sticking with him.
