Off-colour Brown yet to make breakthrough
O'Connor can cap good year
ITV4, 12.45pm Friday
It hasn't quite happened for Keegan Brown, who just three years ago was seen as one of the future stars of darts.
At the 2014 Grand Slam the Isle of Wight arrowsmith and reigning world youth champion hit the headlines by beating Adrian Lewis and Raymond van Barneveld, hinting at a special talent being born.
Three relatively barren years later we are still awaiting the breakthrough. And it may not be this weekend in Minehead.
Brown is still a lovely thrower but very erratic and barely merits favouritism against Jermaine Wattimena from Holland in round one of the Players Championship Finals, a player who has reached a couple of tour semis this autumn.
James Wilson struggles to have much of an impact on the big stage and looks worth taking on against Willie O’Connor.
It’s been a good year for O’Connor, who won the Tom Kirby Trophy last month and followed that by beating Vincent van der Voort, Jamie Caven, Joe Cullen and Peter Wright to reach a Players Championship semi-final, far and away his best day’s work on the PDC Tour.
Wilson was a group-stage casualty at the Grand Slam and continues to fall at the first in TV events.
