Preview

Gary Anderson kicks off a critical year by making a welcome return to the Ladbrokes Masters, where he can beat Ian White in his first-round contest.

The Flying Scotsman gave the seasonal curtain-raiser a miss last year because of an ongoing back problem which also saw him bypass the Premier League.

It was the beginning of a disappointing campaign for the Scot, who failed to land a singles title and now faces a nosedive down the rankings unless he can buck up his ideas.

So why fancy him against the rock-sold White?

Firstly, the price. Even last year’s Anderson looks overpriced at 3-4 against Diamond White and if he is able to raise his game he could wipe the floor with him.

Anderson boasts a 9-4 head-to-head record against White and produced strong averages against Ryan Searle and Nathan Aspinall at the worlds around Christmas.

White fell at the first hurdle at Alexandra Palace and has a shocking record at the Masters, where he has appeared five times but is yet to win a game.

Bookmakers clearly expect a fair few maximums in the game between Daryl Gurney and Dave Chisnall.

These are prodigious maximum hitters, but they are also streaky, and in a match which can’t go beyond 19 legs both men are going to have to be leathering the treble-20 bed for a mark of 10.5 to be cleared.
