Day seven preview
James Wade got the better of Rob Cross in their group showdown at the Grand Slam on Monday but Voltage can turn the tables in their best-of-31 legs quarter-final in Wolverhampton.
Wade was a 5-2 winner in the Group C match as the left-hander hit 50 per cent of his doubles and Cross just 28. That was the difference and over short formats games can easily swing on just a few missed doubles.
Now we're into marathon territory and if Cross can weather those moments of Wade magic that the veteran leftie always produces at key moments, the ex-world champ's greater consistency could make the difference.
Cross, the newly-crowned European champion, has got his mojo back, and if he wins this he will surely do so with a trademark barrage of 180s.
Cross averages a maximum every 4.4 legs on tour this season, Wade one every 5.2. That's a significant difference which could well be exaggerated over the longer distance.
The other quarter-final is an all-Welsh showdown between world number one Gerwyn Price and man of the year Jonny Clayton – and the layers can hardly call it.
They have met four times this season with Gezzy winning on the floor and then at the Matchplay. Since then, however, The Ferret has avenged those losses with success in the Grand Prix final and last eight of the World Series, which Clayton also went on to win.
Clayton has Price's number and is playing well, although odds-on quotes about him beating a double Grand Slam winner who can raise his game better than most makes little appeal.
