Preview
Once upon a time a showdown between Michael van Gerwen and Adrian Lewis would have been top of the bill, yet those two are very much the support act on Saturday's sizzling quarter-final card at the BoyleSports Grand Slam.
Mighty Mike, despite struggling with a cold, is proving far too strong for mortals in good health and he should have way too much for Lewis, even though Jackpot is showing glimpses of a return to form.
But that’s the undercard; a potential good ’un, make no mistake, but very definitely not the game of the night.
That, of course, is Gerwyn Price against Gary Anderson, a rematch of last year’s ill-tempered final which saw jostling on the oche and led to sanctions all round.
They have met again since – far from prying eyes out in Las Vegas in the summer, a match which Gezzy won 10-8 – but this is going to be explosive in front of a crowd baying for another barney.
Price is the raw meat in the dog pound and it will be fascinating to see whether he tones down the stage theatrics (as he seems to have) and whether he still manages to get under the skin of Anderson, whose game is a mystery to everyone, including him.
Anderson averaged 105 in a 5-3 win over Willie O’Connor but the shorter the format the less can go wrong. In Thursday’s 10-8 win against Robert Thornton he barely surpassed 90 and played in patches.
He got away with it against The Thorn but that won’t cut it against Price, who is a model of consistency these days, everything his Scottish opponent is not.
In the other game, over 15.5 180s looks a decent bet at evens with BoyleSports.
Van Gerwen and Lewis both hit nine in their second-round matches, the Dutchman in a 10-7 win over Ian White, Jackpot in a 10-9 nailbiter against James Wade.
Now we’re into best-of-31 territory these in-form big hitters could go ballistic.
