Day two preview

Michael Smith and Joe Cullen got their Grand Slam of Darts campaigns off to a winning start so Sunday’s showdown should go some way to determining who tops Group C.

Smith made hard work of beating his opening opponent Lisa Ashton as he averaged just 91.21 in a 5-3 win and failed to hit a maximum.

That inconsistent scoring is unlike Bully Boy and, given that he is also struggling on hitting doubles, Smith looks worth opposing against Cullen, who looked far more composed as he breezed past Ritchie Edhouse 5-1.

There should be little between the pair over this format but Cullen was more convincing in his opener - he averaged 93.51 and fired in two 180s - so makes plenty of appeal as an outsider.

Martin Schindler pushed the in-form Dirk van Duijvenbode all the way in a 5-4 defeat in his Group D opener and the German should make light work of Adam Gawlas.

Schindler played extremely well in that defeat, averaging 98.31, and a repeat performance would see him past an out-of-sorts Gawlas.

The Czech chucker was readily outclassed in a 5-2 defeat to Rob Cross in his Grand Slam curtain-raiser, a game where he averaged just 81.75 and managed only one visit over 140.
