Peter Wright, the only semi-finalist at last week’s US Masters who is in Cologne this weekend, can continue his improved form by claiming his first individual title in ten months.

Snakebite, who has been on an upward curve for a couple of months following a depressing end to the Premier League, chucked in ton-plus averages against Daryl Gurney and Nathan Aspinall, who went on to win the tournament but isn’t in the field for the German Masters.

The world number five is a 10-1 shot and that looks a big price for a player of his pedigree who is in the other half of the draw to Michael van Gerwen and Rob Cross.

Wright opens up against Robert Marijanovic and is then slated to play Gary Anderson, who he partnered to World Cup glory last month. That was Wright’s first piece of silverware since last September and came just a few days after reaching the Dutch Masters semis. He’s playing well.

Draw

(1) P Wright v R Marijanovic
G Anderson v N Kurz
(4) D Gurney v C Bunse
J Wade v K Munch

(2) M van Gerwen v M Schindler
M Suljovic v M Langendorf
(3) R Cross v M Hopp
R van Barneveld v G Clemens

The same can’t be said of Van Gerwen, who looked like he threw in the towel against Michael Smith in Las Vegas, where he produced a sub-90 average. If you’re prepared to take a price as skinny as 11-10 about the Green Machine, you’d at least want to be sure he was 100 per cent focused on the task.

It’s an interesting field minus Aspinall and Smith, last week’s finalists, with James Wade, Mensur Suljovic and Raymond van Barneveld coming in.

Barney has a tough battle against the excellent Gabriel Clemens, though the Dutchman has beaten the German twice this year on the floor.

At last week’s US Masters not one of the North American stars toppled a PDC big gun in round one but a clean sweep is less easy to predict this time given the calibre of the central European underdogs.

Certainly Schindler looks a massive price at 7-1 against Van Gerwen, regardless of whether or not the world champ is fully motivated.
