Tournament preview

The German Darts Grand Prix returns after a three-year hiatus and unsurprisingly the man who has won its three previous editions, Michael van Gerwen, is 4-1 favourite.

The Green Machine is a worthy market leader but given the depth at the top level of the sport these days he does look a tad short, particularly as he faces a potential third-round clash with Rob Cross.

Two of the PDC's brightest young talents toe the oche in Munich hungry for their first stage titles having both won floor events in 2022.

Ryan Searle has been one of the most consistent players around this year, winning one and reaching the final of another two of the 13 Players Championship events since February.

Heavy Metal was a leg away from winning his first Major in last year’s Players Championship Finals, when he was beaten 11-10 by Peter Wright in the Minehead finale.

With that experience under his belt, Searle seems ready to contend regularly in the big tournaments and looks to have been housed in the softest quarter of the Munich draw. Gerwyn Price, who is still feeling the effects of a hand injury, is his primary rival in the section.

Another young star who could pick up his first European Tour title this weekend is Luke Humphries. Cool Hand was victorious in his first floor event earlier this year and the former PDC World Youth Champion was runner up in last year’s UK Open.

Humphries has landed in a very winnable bottom quarter with the inconsistent Michael Smith and Joe Cullen his leading dangers.

Since the turn of the year, Humphries and Searle have the seventh and eighth best averages respectively in the PDC and now could be the time they deliver on their undoubted promise.
