Preview

It's hard to believe that Michael Smith hasn’t won a trophy of any kind in 16 months but Bully Boy looks like he’s in the mood to end that drought in Wolverhampton.

Smith emerged with maximum points from the Group of Death at the
BoyleSports Grand Slam and can now get the better of Daryl Gurney in the first knockout round.

There are plenty of critics of the format of this annual autumnal invitational dust-up in which the PDC and BDO worlds collide but the group stage has thrown up a couple of belting second-round showdowns with Smith and Gurney sharing the limelight with Rob Cross and Peter Wright on Wednesday night.

Cross gets the nod in that one even though he says he has to improve on his efforts over the first few days.

Snakebite is throwing with new darts once more and hasn’t been in the greatest nick while Voltage has won six of their last nine clashes.

Smith is preferred over Gurney having shown his calibre to see off Nathan Aspinall, Glen Durrant and Martin Schindler in the trickiest of the eight qualifying sections. Smith produced a staggering 113-plus average in his 5-1 hammering of Aspinall.

Gurney is into the knockout round having won two of his three group games, the defeat coming against Gabriel Clemens.
German star Clemens looked superb in topping Group G and is clearly a player on the up.

So impressive has he been that he’s as short as evens in places against Durrant, the reigning BDO world champ and already a winner on the PDC Tour this year.

But this is now new territory for Clemens and best-of-19 legs is a far cry from the lightning-fast best-of-nine which has been the format up to this point.

Now we’re in Duzza country and he clearly has the game to go toe-to-toe with anyone. Expect a massive improvement from the current Lakeside champ.
