Semi-final preview

Gerwyn Price is making all the noise at the Morningside Arena in Leicester yet it's his compatriot Jonny Clayton who could well be the man sneaking under the radar to glory at the BoyleSports World Grand Prix.

It's odds-on that there is an all-Welsh final in the East Midlands with Price favourite to successfully defend the crown he claimed last autumn.

But Clayton hasn't put a foot wrong so far, is playing out of his skin and clearly has the game to beat anyone – and that includes Price.

First up, of course, Clayton has to take care of Danny Noppert, the last Dutchman standing because he himself has taken care of two others, Michael van Gerwen and Vincent van der Voort.

Clayton versus Noppert promises to be a high-class affair on the grounds that each man has averaged over 90 in each of his games so far, which is a exemplary when you consider the double-in format of the tournament.

Clayton looks to be getting better and better and was simply majestic against Krzysztof Ratajski in the quarters, winning 3-2 with a 91 average, 58 per cent on his starting doubles and 68 per cent on his finishing doubles.

How Noppert has found his form is anyone's guess but Masters and Premier League winner Clayton looks to have new gears, and has showed his class by coming from behind to beat both Jose de Sousa and Ratajski.

In the other semi-final, Price should have too much firepower for Stephen Bunting and the fact that the crowd have turned against the Iceman only makes a Welsh win even likelier.

This consummate panto villain branded the natives "pathetic" after they gave him all barrels during his demolition of Dave Chisnall on Thursday night, but he just thrives on the flak.

When they met at the world semi-finals at Alexandra Palace after Christmas, Bunting led 3-1 and 4-3 but still couldn't get the job done against a player in Price whose self-belief is at levels not seen since Phil Taylor's pomp.

It's best-of-seven sets now so there is scope for plenty of maximums from two men who trade in them. Price notched five in his first-round battering of Michael Smith and that match lasted only nine legs.

However, he also missed out completely against Chizzy and there are no guarantees that this game will go to seven sets – in fact you'd probably bet against that happening.
