Match previews

Rob Cross fell in love with Blackpool in July when he became World Matchplay champion but he definitely doesn’t have the same affectionate pangs for Dublin.

Voltage has twice qualified for the BoyleSports World Grand Prix and twice lost to Steve Beaton in round one.

Over the course of those two efforts Cross hit just three leg-winning doubles and averaged around 80. He didn’t seem to have a plan for doubling-in and played like a novice.

Lessons learned, the assumption is that he will be a bit cuter this time when he attempts to make it third time lucky – although punters shouldn't bank on it.

While Cross may be flitting around the outer ring looking for inspiration, opponent Mensur Suljovic will have eyes only for double 14, a corner of the darts board which the Austrian has been nailing for years now.

Suljovic can beat any opponent if he is successfully dialled into double 14 and he looks well worth backing to beat Cross for a sixth time in their last eight meetings.

Dave Chisnall can also do a job on Gerwyn Price in another mouthwatering tie.

Price has been playing brilliantly all year but Chizzy has also been producing the goods, albeit more sporadically, and the underdog shouldn’t be written off.

He won a couple of floor titles in the winter, took Danish Open glory in June, and has appeared in two more finals in the last three weeks.

And, lest we forget, Chisnall is a former Grand Prix finalist, making a nonsense of the notion that he’s too inconsistent on his doubles to be a challenger in this format.
