Final preview
Gerwyn Price and Jonny Clayton led Wales to the 2020 World Cup of Darts as a team but the two friends are on opposite sides of the oche this evening as they battle for the BoyleSports World Grand Prix title.
The duelling Dragons have met many times in recent years but Price has established a monopoly when it comes to victories, claiming eight straight successes over his compatriot, the most recent of which was an 11-3 hammering in the World Matchplay in July.
That is reflected in the match odds for Sunday's final. World champion Price is 4-6 to retain his World Grand Prix title with the Ferret the 13-10 underdog.
However, the fact that they are reasonably close in the betting is a testament to Clayton's recent performances and Price's somewhat fortuitous run to the final.
Make no mistake, the Iceman is the best player in the world but he was outscored by Dave Chisnall in the quarter-finals, winning 3-0 due to Chizzy's complete capitulation on the doubles, and there was not a great deal between him and Stephen Bunting in the semis.
Clayton, on the other hand, has been superb at the Morningside Arena, averaging in excess of 90 in all four of his matches - a fine achievement given the double-in, double-out format of the Grand Prix.
He was excellent against Danny Noppert in the semi-finals, chalking up a 94.82 average despite a 40 per cent checkout rate, but it's on the doubles where Price may have the edge.
The head-to-head record is difficult to ignore but the Ferret, a 2021 winner of the Ladbrokes Masters and the Premier League, is playing so well that it's not hard to envisage him finally defeating his old pal.
With the result difficult to call, a better bet could be to take Price to hit the most 180s.
The 36-year-old trades in maximums and has hit 17 in four matches at the World Grand Prix, despite amazingly drawing a blank against Chisnall. He more than made up for that by firing in seven against Bunting on Friday.
Clayton has scored well throughout the event but he has recorded just nine 180s across the tournament and was happy to switch to treble 19 on several occasions against Noppert, so there's no guarantees he will match the Iceman in that regard.
