Match previews

Female flag-bearers Lisa Ashton and Fallon Sherrock are the star turns on night one of the Grand Slam in Wolverhampton but they face daunting challenges and heavy defeats.

Multiple world champ Ashton is a 6-1 shot to get the better of Michael van Gerwen in Group G before Sherrock has the dubious honour of taking on Peter Wright in Group E.

Ashton and Sherrock continue to improve with every opportunity they get but Van Gerwen can be ruthless and really ought to put the Lancashire Rose in her place. And 11-10 about the Dutch master winning 5-1 or 5-0 looks the way to go.

Big things are expected of Jonny Clayton this week – as they are every week currently given he's turned into a winning machine – but he might not find his afternoon tussle with Rusty-Jake Rodriguez a walk in the park.

RJ3 has also been winning for fun in 2021, albeit on the lower-grade European Development Tour, but his averages have been seriously impressive and he looks to have a bigger future than either of his well-regarded brothers. He can cover the spread against The Ferret.
