Tournament preview

Defending champion Gerwyn Price and Grand Prix runner-up Dave Chisnall are in the kind of form which suggests they could be the players to challenge Michael van Gerwen for glory at the BoyleSports Grand Slam in Wolverhampton.

Twelve months after his controversial breakthrough success, Price returns to Aldersley Leisure Village in rich nick with a couple of wins over the last two months and a string of runs to the later stages of big events.

Gezzy will quite likely face a showdown with Gary Anderson either in round two or the last eight in a repeat of last year’s bad-tempered final, though on current form the Welshman should win it easily.

Chisnall heads for the Black Country having reached the World Series semis following his brilliant run to the BoyleSports Grand Prix final in Dublin.

The Grand Slam is an invitational 32-player event featuring eight representatives from the BDO, including world women’s finalists Mikuru Suzuki and Lisa Ashton, with the top two from eight groups going into the knockout stage.

Here are the best group bets:

Group A

Michael van Gerwen, winner of three of the last four TV events, looks nailed on, though he did lose a group game against Johnny Clayton 12 months ago.

BDO rep Jim Williams, a semi-finalist at the Lakeside in January, is a ferocious scorer and the World Trophy champ. He could well follow him through.

Group E

Chizzy and Rob Cross are the form horses in this section alongside Jamie Hughes and Lisa Ashton, the best ever lady arrowsmith. As the bigger price of the top two, Chisnall looks a decent bet.

Group F

Wayne Warren is coming back from an injury which could inconvenience him in a section where Peter Wright and Danny Noppert look set to progress.

Snakebite is playing okay but Noppert, who reached the World Series final last Sunday, is preferred.
