Preview

Robert Thornton suffered the biggest televised humiliation of his career at the hands of compatriot Gary Anderson and he has to fear another hiding when the former World Cup pals clash in round two of the BoyleSports Grand Slam of Darts.

The Thorn endured a night to forget in Blackpool at the World Matchplay nine years ago when when he was battered 10-0 by Anderson.

That was a best-of-19 affair, as is Thursday night's encounter in Wolverhampton, and while Thornton could nick a few legs itmay not be many. Anderson at 11-10 to cover a 3.5-leg handicap looks the best bet.

The pair haven’t met for 18 months, a period during which Thornton has all but disappeared off the radar.

A former top-ten player and major winner, the Scot has slumped to 58th in the world and is just delighted to be back on the big stage.

He was blessed with an easy group, in which he pipped an equally off-colour Dimitri van den Bergh and ladies champion Mikuru Suzuki, but there is nothing easy about the task of facing Anderson.

Anderson averaged around the 98 mark to win his group and last year’s beaten finalist gives the impression of a man who is determined to avenge his near-miss of 12 months ago.

The tournament sponsors are by some distance biggest about Ian White hitting more 180s than his opponent Michael van Gerwen.

Diamond is in rock-solid form and looks well worth an interest at a decent price for most maximums.

The Green Machine should be too mean for White in terms of the match betting but the Dutchman switches far more than his opponent, whose straight-down-the-line throw lends itself to 180s. Van Gerwen has bagged six maximums in 21 legs and White seven in 25.
