World Matchplay semi-final preview

Dimitri van den Bergh's love affair with Blackpool shows no sign of ending and having taken care of Peter Wright in the last eight of the Betfred World Matchplay, the Belgian is worth backing to do a job on Michael van Gerwen in the last four.

Champion in 2020 (in Milton Keynes) and runner-up last year, Van den Bergh has won 12 of the 13 matches he has played in the PDC's summer major and has no reason to fear the Green Machine.

Take the 6-5 about a victory for Van den Bergh, who reeled off ten straight legs during his 16-14 win over Wright, averaging over 102 despite not having a ton-plus finish.

Van den Bergh has only ever beaten Van Gerwen once, but this of course is a Mighty Mike fresh back from wrist surgery, playing well in patches but without his famed, ruthless consistency.

He was 11-4 up against Nathan Aspinall on Thursday night and MvG of old would have cruised home from there. This time, however, he limped over the line and was clearly rattled by a couple of show-stopping Aspinall finishes as the stakes got higher.

What both these men are doing is smashing in 180s. They combined for 23 in their quarters – 12-11 to the Dutchman – and there is every reason to think this match will go 30 legs or more.

Van den Bergh is favourite to hit most maximums, although the bookmakers might be short with their 8.5 total for Van Gerwen. He's gone 2-7-12 through the tournament so the trajectory is only going one way and the games are getting longer.
