World Matchplay final preview

Sometimes it can pay to look away from the obvious but Gerwyn Price’s performance against Danny Noppert in the semi-finals is hard to ignore when the Iceman takes on Michael van Gerwen in a blockbuster World Matchplay final this evening.

Price rattled in a 102 three-dart average, hit 13 180s and a nine-dart finish in his last-four clash with Noppert and the Welshman seems to be in the form that saw him dominate darts at the end of 2020.

The Iceman was also brilliant when averaging 104.64 in a high-class quarter-final against Jose de Sousa and his efforts at the Winter Gardens have been the standout performances of the tournament.

If anyone can stop Price it’s MVG, but the Dutchman isn’t quite at his brilliant best. Mighty Mike has worked wonders to battle back from what looked like a serious injury and the fact that he has made this final is testament to the talent and commitment of Van Gerwen.

However, MVG only squeezed past Dimitri van den Bergh and Nathan Apsinall, while Joe Cullen let the Dutchman off the hook and the Green Machine wasn’t great against Adrian Lewis.

Price is 8-11 to lift the World Matchplay crown and that offer is too big to ignore.
