Mensur Suljovic looks worth a bet to inflict more hurt on James Wade
Day four
Sky Sports Action, 7pm Tuesday
Mensur Suljovic's grasp of English isn't the best so he's probably blissfully unaware that he has been talked down as a contender at this year's Betfred World Matchplay – but the ninth seed could prove his doubters wrong.
The Austrian arrived in Blackpool in no sort of form – he beat a couple of no-marks to make the semis at the German Masters and that's about it – yet produced one of the performances of the weekend to batter Jermaine Wattimena 10-1.
Clearly the cuddly Dutchman lacked the temperament to stand up to Suljovic, a player he always loses to. James Wade, on the other hand, has all the stagecraft going.
Yet despite that, Suljovic gets the nod against Wade in round two at the Winter Gardens.
These gutsy double-machines have met 17 times and Suljovic boasts an 11-6 advantage including wins in both of their Premier League matches this year.
Wade, the 2007 Matchplay champion, had won only one match in Blackpool over the last three runnings before edging Jeffrey de Zwaan in a tiebreak on Sunday evening. Suljovic, of course, reached last year's final and clearly loves the place.
As predicted, Michael van Gerwen beat Steve Beaton in his opener, though the manner of the 10-6 win left more questions than answers. The world number one had gone into the event after a fairly ordinary run of form and missed way too many doubles in a muddled effort against The Adonis.
Super Smoggie Glen Durrant, unlike Beaton, has the game to give Van Gerwen a harder night, especially based on the manner in which he tore apart Adrian Lewis on his debut. Durrant looks well worth a bet.
