Preview

England and New Zealand have fought out several memorable battles across all formats in recent years and once again there is plenty on the line when the two teams face off at the Brisbane Cricket Ground on Tuesday morning.

The Three Lions famously emerged triumphant in the most incredible of 50-over World Cup finals in 2019, but Kane Williamson and his Black Caps roared back in the semi-finals of the 2021 T20 World Cup, chasing down 167 with an over to spare before losing to Australia in the final.

Now they clash again in Group One of the 2022 T20 World Cup in what is now a must-win game for England due in part to their own failings but also because of the inclement Australian weather which has blighted the Super 12 stage of the tournament.

Jos Buttler's men opened their World Cup campaign with a scrappy five-wicket triumph over Afghanistan in Perth before the weather gods intervened in their next two matches - a five-run DLS defeat against Ireland and a washout against Australia.

England will have considered themselves unfortunate to have lost to Ireland - they bat deep and Moeen Ali was just starting to get his eye in when the rain came down. But in truth they bowled poorly and the batting order struggled just as it had against Afghanistan.

They have three points from as many matches but another defeat at the Gabba against New Zealand will almost certainly put an end to their semi-final hopes.

With a win a necessity, the money has come for England, who have been cut from 8-11 to 8-13. They deserve to be favourites given the quality in their ranks but the prices have arguably swung too far in their direction with New Zealand looking an attractive proposition at 13-8.

The Kiwis sat top of Group One on Sunday evening and haven't put a foot wrong in the tournament, hammering hosts Australia by 89 runs and easing to a 65-run triumph over Sri Lanka in two matches in Sydney either side of an MCG washout against Afghanistan.

England's high-powered batting order has failed to fire so far, whereas Devon Conway (92 not out against Australia) and Glenn Phillips, who cracked 104 against the Lankans, have produced fantastic individual performances for the Black Caps.

Buttler, in particular, has yet to get going and with the Kiwis' opening bowlers, Tim Southee and Trent Boult, both in fine form, the underdogs could go some way to sealing England's fate before they face Sri Lanka in Saturday's Group One finale.

Before England's date with destiny, bottom pair Sri Lanka and Afghanistan form the first part of Gabba double-header in the early hours of Tuesday morning with the Lankans favourites to claim victory.

Despite finding New Zealand too strong, they previously eased past Ireland and were competitive against the Aussies before a Marcus Stoinis onslaught took the game away from them.

They should pick up the victory and middle-order batsman Charith Asalanka, who has chipped in with three useful innings in the 30s in this tournament, looks overpriced to top their batting card at 6-1.
