Finals Day preview

A pulsating Twenty20 Blast season draws to a close on Saturday but there are sure to be more twists and turns on Finals Day, which is headlined for the first time by a Roses Derby.

Rivals Lancashire and Yorkshire are set to lock horns for a third time in this season's competition at Edgbaston and if the previous meetings are anything to go by, it is sure to be a high-octane affair.

The sides tied in their clash at Old Trafford in May with Yorkshire's Harry Brook having been dismissed lbw with the final ball of the match, while Lancashire edged the follow-up game at Headingley by only four runs.

In the more recent meeting, Yorkshire had found themselves needing only 32 runs from 24 balls at one stage but fluffed their lines.

But while the individual matches between the Roses rivals have been close, the bigger picture suggests Lancashire are the better side.

Lightning go into Finals Day with eight wins from their 14 regular-season fixtures and looked very comfortable in their seven-wicket triumph over Essex in their quarter-final, having coped well with absences due to international commitments this season.

Yorkshire, meanwhile, could be handed a boost by the return of Dawid Malan for this contest but they were helped into the last eight by Leicestershire having been docked points due to ill discipline and their quarter-final tie with Surrey was tight.

Yorkshire posted a mediocre total of 160 at the Oval, and Surrey needed only five runs from their final over of that match to progress to Finals Day, only for Jordan Thompson to keep his cool and concede only three to help Yorkshire advance.

Bookmakers seem to have got it right in the outright market with Lancashire favourites to lift the T20 Blast trophy and that could be a good bet too at 11-4.

In the other clash at Edgbaston, Hampshire and Somerset meet on Finals Day for the second year running.

When they came together at this stage in 2021, Somerset prevailed by two wickets before losing to Kent Spitfires in the final but Hampshire can exact their revenge this time.

Hampshire look a stronger side this year with 2022 addition Ben McDermott - who has 401 runs in the Blast - easing pressure on star man James Vince, who has nonetheless scored 653 in the competition this term, at the crease.

They got the better of Somerset when these sides met at Taunton last month with Vince striking an unbeaten 129 on that occasion and Hampshire went into the quarter-finals on a four-match unbeaten run.

They followed that with a 104-run demolition of North Group winners Birmingham Bears and should be in fine spirits heading into Finals Day.
