England are 11-2 to win the four-Test series in South Africa after slumping to a 107-run defeat in the opening game in Centurion.

The damage was done in the first innings as Joe Root’s men slipped from 142-3 to 181 all out, handing the Proteas a lead of 103.

Set an unlikely victory target of 376 in the fourth innings, England made a solid start and their odds had contracted from 6-1 at the start of the chase to 6-5 before Ben Stokes was the fourth man out with the score at 204.

South Africa, surprisingly beaten by Sri Lanka in their most recent home Test series, are 4-7 to win the series and 9-1 with Betfair and Paddy Power to triumph 4-0.

The second Test starts in Cape Town on January 3. Uncapped batsman Keegan Petersen has been called up to replace the injured Aiden Markram for South Africa while England’s Ollie Pope should be fit to return in place of Jonny Bairstow, who made one and nine in the first Test.

No batsman managed a century in Centurion so Quinton de Kock's 95 and 34 give him a healthy lead in the race to be South Africa's leading series runscorer.

Rory Burns (93), Joe Denly (81) and ante-post favourite Root are the leading batsmen for England after one Test.
