Seventh T20 preview

A match-winning unbeaten 88 from opener Phil Salt on Friday ensured England’s enthralling T20 series in Pakistan all comes down to a seventh and decisive rubber on Sunday.

Bookmakers have struggled to split the pair for the entirety of the landmark series, which has been England’s first visit to Pakistan in 17 years.

But the emphatic nature of Friday’s success, when Moeen Ali’s tourists chased down 170 inside 15 overs, has persuaded the layers to make England favourites for Sunday's decider.

A series win would be their first since a 2-1 home success over Pakistan in July 2021. And it would be a timely boost going into the upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia, where England will bid to add the 20-over crown to the 50-over equivalent they won so memorably in 2019.

Series defeats to India and South Africa on home soil this summer had put England’s position as second favourites for that tournament into some doubt, but their performances in Pakistan have been much more encouraging.

With limited-overs captain Jos Buttler injured, one-day linchpin Jonny Bairstow joining him on the sidelines and top-order mainstay Jason Roy jettisoned after a poor summer, England had a look of a side in transition.

But the reintroduction of Alex Hales and emergence of fellow opener Salt have allayed those fears somewhat and show the strength in depth England possess in white-ball cricket.

Hales played second fiddle to opening partner Salt on Friday but there have been signs that a big score is not too far around the corner for the Nottinghamshire man.

He registered a 40-ball half-century on his first England appearance in over three years in the first T20 clash in Karachi and cracked four fours and a six in an eventful 27 from just 12 balls on Friday.

His excellent form for The Hundred winners Trent Rockets could not have come at a better time given the struggles of his former opening partner Roy, and the 33-year-old can cement his place in England's World Cup 11 by leading them to a series success in Lahore.
