Match preview

Outright favourites India began this year's Twenty20 World Cup campaign with a crushing ten-wicket defeat to rivals Pakistan and will have to pick themselves up quickly ahead of Sunday's clash with New Zealand in Dubai.

Virat Kohli's men failed to take a single wicket against Pakistan but they also disappointed with the bat as openers KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma put on only three between them.

Kohli (57) and Rishabh Pant (39) were the only India players to surpass 13 runs in their opening match of the tournament, leaving the Men in Blue on the back foot going into the rest of their Super 12 campaign.

New Zealand also lost their first game against Pakistan but they claimed five wickets and lost with only five balls remaining.

The Kiwis' attack can certainly cause India problems but their bowling strength is not limited only to swing bowling duo Trent Boult and Tim Southee.

Legbreak bowler Ish Sodhi has been a consistently strong performer with the ball and even against a spin-aware India side, he could record promising figures.

Sodhi took 2-28 in that defeat to Pakistan and finished with figures of 3-26 in the warm-up encounter with the tournament's second-favourites England beforehand.

That contributed to a tally of 19 wickets in T20 internationals in 2021 for Sodhi and he looks a worthwhile bet to claim at least two wickets against the country of his birth.

Afghanistan became the third team to lose to Pakistan at this World Cup on Friday but they put up a fight, posting 147-6 and losing with only one over to spare.

They opened the tournament with a 130-run thrashing of Scotland and should justify quotes of 1-6 when they take on Namibia at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in the day's earlier contest.
